연구의 필요성 및 목적 Ginseng은 아시아 국가에서 널리 사용되어왔던 약용식물임. 최근 Korean red ginseng(KRG)의 성인immune functions 에 대한 유효성이 보고되어왔음. 본 연구는 advanced cancer에 대하여 chemotherypy 중단, 또는stem cell transplantation을 받은 소아의 immune function 에 대한 ginseng의 기능을 관찰함. 2.연구방법: 2004년 6월에서 2009년 6월사이에 영남대학 병원의 소아청소년과에서 leukemia와 solid cancer로 진단, 치료 받은 30 인 환자를 대상으로 실시함. 1년간 KRG extract (60 mg/kg/d) 을 복용한 군과 KRG을 복용하지 않은 환자를 대조군으로 결정하여 비교함. 혈액 시료는 매 6개월 마다 채취함. Immuno assays는 lymphocyte subpopulation, serum cytokines (IL- 2, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma)와 total concentrations of serum IgG, IgA 및 IgM subclasse를 포함함. 진단 연령은 2개월에서 15세(median 5 yr) 사이이며 9명을 stem cell tansplantation을 받음. 3. 연구결과: KRG 군에서 cytokine 은 대조군에 비하여 현저히 빠르게 감소하였음. Lymphocyte subpopulations (T cell, B cell, NK cell, T4, T8, and T4/ T8 ratio) 과 serum immunoglobulin subclasses (IgG, IgA, and IgM)는 군간에 차이를 나타내지 않았음. 4. 결론 이 결과는 KRG extract 가 chemotherapy 이후의 소아에서 inflammatory cytokines을 stabilizing effect 를 나타냄을 시사함. 5. 주제어: Childhood cancer; Cytokine; Korean red ginseng; Panax ginseng.
